BookBench Winners Announced!

A hugely successful competition and exhibition is making a welcome return to Crowngate Shopping Centre.

Crowngate’s BookBench Competition, inviting all students aged 7 and up, to submit design ideas for book-shaped seating for the shopping centre, will open as an exhibition from 1st July 2017.

The exhibition will feature a number of ‘BookBenches’ dotted around the shopping centre, which will be decorated with winning designs from students across Worcestershire and Herefordshire, depicting interpretations of their favourite reads.

The winning 9 designs have now been selected from the 399 entries from 19 schools, colleges and universities.

Deadline for design submissions – 24th March 2017
Designs must be submitted via a BookBench Design Sheet (3 pages), which you’ll find within the Creative Pack. Complete your details on the form above to download.

Winners will be announced – 10th April 2017
Winning designs will be chosen by an independent panel of judges and notified by email. Crowngate website and social media platforms will also announce the news.

Benches delivered to winning schools – 25th April 2017
Crowngate Shopping Centre will arrange delivery of the blank BookBenches to the education providers by prior arrangement, on or around 18th April.

Benches collected from schools – 12th June 2017
Crowngate Shopping Centre will arrange for the collection of the decorated BookBenches from the education providers on 12th June 2017, delivering the benches to the shopping centre where they will be varnished.

Exhibition commences – 1st July 2017
Winning education providers will be invited to a launch event, held at the shopping centre to mark the opening of the exhibition on 1st July.

Exhibition moves to The Hive – 4th September 2017 TBC
The benches will be on display at The Hive for a further 6 weeks.

BookBench auction – After 1st November 2017

Design a BookBench for CrownGate Shopping Centre

Stories take us to amazing new worlds and to celebrate, Crowngate Shopping Centre is launching an out-of-this-world competition for local school, college and university students, aged 7+.

Following the HUGE success of last year’s BookBench Competition and Exhibition, doubling the number of entries received from our first year, Crowngate are delighted to bring this exciting project back for 2017, for it’s third year.

We are looking for students to submit designs of their favourite books, that ultimately could be used to decorate 3D life-size benches, in the shape of open books.

The BookBenches will be displayed as an exhibition within Crowngate shopping centre in Worcester, followed by The Hive. This competition is open to all pupils from schools, colleges and universities within Worcestershire and Herefordshire, for students aged 7 and up.

There are 3 age categories:
– 7-11 years old
– 12-16 years old
– 17+ years

There is no limit to the number of designs that can be submitted per education provider. Design submissions can be made for an individual student, a group, class or whole school.

Specific Terms and Conditions – Book Bench Competition & Exhibition 2017
The following rules (“Rules”) together with Crowngate Shopping Centre (“Crowngate”) general and competition terms and conditions (the “Terms and Conditions”) (which can be found at apply to ‘CrownGate Book Bench Competition 2017’ (“the Competition”) which will run from Monday 30th January 2017 – Friday 24th March 2017 at 5pm (“the Duration”). The competition winners will be announced on Monday 10th April 2017 before 5pm.

Anyone who enters the Competition (an “Entrant”) will be deemed to have understood these Rules along with the Terms and Conditions and will be bound by them.  The Terms and Conditions are available on request from Crowngate Shopping Centre.

Details of the Competition
The competition is open to all pupils from schools, colleges and universities within Worcestershire, aged 7 years and over. There are 3 age categories: 7–11 years old, 12–16 years old, 17+ years (9 benches in total). To enter, visit to download a ‘BookBench Creative Pack’.

Design submissions can only be received via a “BookBench Design Sheet” either via email (PDF or JPG) to or original copies (A3 or A4) delivered to BookBench Competition, Central Management Suite, Crowngate Shopping Centre, 54 Friary Walk, Worcester. WR1 3LE.

Each design entry is made up of a front and back of the bench, plus an information sheet, with details of your institution and pupils involved in the design (3 pages). Designs can be submitted as a whole school, group or individual representing an institution (permission must be obtained from your school, college or university).

There is no limit to the number of entries that can be submitted by each education provider. No purchase necessary. Designs must be original and not copied directly from artwork or illustrations where copyright is applicable. Once the winning designs are announced, benches will be delivered to the winning schools, to be decorated, then returned to the shopping centre for the exhibition.

The winning designs will be selected by independent adjudicators, who will select their favourite designs based on design, creativity and originality. This judgement is based solely on the personal opinion of the independent adjudicators. The winners will be notified via email, plus posted on Crowngate website, Facebook and Twitter pages, that their design has been selected.

Design entries must be from pupils from schools, colleges and universities within Worcestershire or Herefordshire, who are aged 7 years and over. Submissions can be entered by teachers, employees, pupils and parents, however permission must be given by the institution that is represented. Pupils aged under 18 shall have obtained the consent of a parent or a guardian (and will provide us with the contact details we need should we wish to verify this).

You win the opportunity to decorate a book-shaped bench, which will be exhibited within Crowngate Shopping Centre from Saturday 1st July 2017 for 9 weeks, followed by a further 6 weeks at The Hive.
The BookBench will be delivered by courier, arranged and funded by Crowngate to the winning institutions on or around 18th April 2017, by prior arrangement.
The winning institutions are required to provide all materials and equipment for decorating the BookBench.
The BookBench will be provided primed and ready to be decorated.
Crowngate will arrange and fund the collection of the decorated BookBench from the institution, back to the shopping centre, on or around 12th June 2017, by prior arrangement.
Crowngate will arrange for the BookBench to be varnished prior to exhibition.
The BookBenches will be exhibited in Crowngate from 1st July 2017 for 9 weeks, where they will be available for the public to access and use as a seating area.
The exhibition will then move to The Hive for a further 6 weeks.
The winning designers will be invited to a launch event at Crowngate Shopping Centre on or around Saturday 2nd July 2016. The BookBenches remain the property of Crowngate at all times.
The Prize is not transferable, no whole/part cash alternatives, and non-refundable.
Should the design winner/s be unable to accept the prize or not respond to Crowngate within 5 days of the notification date, Crowngate reserve the right to draw an alternative winner.
All BookBenches will be sold by public auction to raise funds for The Wooden Spoon – Children’s Charity on or around 1st November 2017.
Details will be forwarded onto all participants of the BookBench competition.
The winner agrees to participate in any and all advertising, promotion or other commercial activities relating to the prize draw and consents and agrees that their photograph, image, likeness and voice may be used by Crowngate in all related promotional activity without any rights of prior approval or inspection.
The selection is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
Crowngate reserves the right to make changes to the anticipated timescales detailed within the BookBench Competition Information Pack.
